- There are PhD Scholarships for students wishing to study at Cambridge University, that are specific to South African applicants. In particular Drs. Thierry d'Almeida (td293@cam.ac.uk) and Jacqui Cole are interested have in having students in several synchrotron-related subjects (dynamical structural properties, shock physics, time-resolved measurements, etc.) Details on the scholarships can be found at http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/univ/gsprospectus/funding/overseas/countries/mandela.html and http://www.joh.cam.ac.uk/admissions/graduate_admissions/finances/scholarships/bradlow
- The NRF has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the French synchrotron SOLEIL in which the NRF has put aside R500 000 a year for funding visits by South African scientists to SOLEIL, providing that the proposals have been passed SOLEIL peer review. Long term visits by researchers or students will also be funded. A briefing session on this will be held at the NRF on the 8th of June. Please contact Ntombi Ditlopo (ntombi@nrf.ac.za) or Bryan Doyle (bpdoyle@uj.ac.za) if you have not yet been invited and would like to attend.
- The South African synchrotron community has been invited to provide a member on the task force for the scientific case for the building of LNLS-2 which will be the new Brazilian synchrotron. Bryan Doyle was chosen by the SRRIC and will be assisted by Raymond Sparrow and Trevor Sewell.
- The School and Workshop Science at Synchrotrons 2009 was held in Pretoria on the CSIR campus from the 9 -14 February. The 2009 Synchrotron Research Roadmap Implementation Committee SRRIC was elected on the last day of the conference.
